Nevadans Demand:
Cost-Saving Clean Energy
Nevada’s energy future belongs to us, not corporations. Stand up against monopoly utilities and expensive, polluting fossil fuel projects.
Energy bills are too high
More and more Nevadans face tough choices between paying high energy bills and essentials like housing, food, and healthcare. But NV Energy and Southwest Gas keep profiting and their executives are getting bonuses.
By trying to dodge regulators and doubling down on expensive and polluting fossil fuels, they continue to grab for more even as families and small businesses suffer. It’s time to put customers first.
Hold NV Energy and Southwest Gas accountable for their actions! We must ensure they make smart, cost-saving investments in local clean energy and energy efficiency, instead of wasting our money on expensive and dirty energy.
Overcharged & Overwhelmed:
Nevadans foot the bill for rising costs
Nevada households and businesses are struggling with skyrocketing bills from NV Energy and Southwest Gas, with some seeing costs double or triple. This financial strain is directly tied to the rising cost of methane (natural) gas.
NV Energy uses methane gas to produce electricity and Southwest Gas delivers it for heating homes and businesses. The monopoly utilities pass all of these rising gas costs down to customers, making us foot the bill.
Nevada’s energy utilities are reporting record profits. Since executives and corporate shareholders are protected from these price spikes, they don’t have to keep bills affordable for customers. And our families are paying the price as a result.
These pressures disproportionately impact underserved Nevadans and those on fixed incomes, forcing families to choose between essential utilities and basic necessities. This is unfair and wrong.
Nevada's Energy Future is Clean, Affordable, and Reliable
Utility spending and profits are brought and paid for by customers
Spending Spree:
Utilities Stand to profit by wasting our hard-earned money
Beyond methane gas costs, NV Energy and Southwest Gas spend millions on energy systems that customers eventually pay off – with interest.
These systems, including methane gas plants and gas pipelines add more dangerous pollution to our homes and air. The more monopoly utilities spend on these dirty projects, the more they can charge customers and payout to shareholders. We are seeing more and more rate hikes to do just that.
While customers across Nevada are struggling to pay high bills, NV Energy and Southwest Gas continue to spend recklessly on hockey promotions and fancy dinners, handing out big bonuses, and seeking more profits through expensive projects.
Utility spending and profits are bought and paid for by customers.
Solutions in Sight: Clean energy protects customers and lowers bills
Methane (natural) gas prices are unpredictable, swinging wildly and putting customers at risk. Ending our dependence on these dirty and expensive fossil fuels will give Nevada families more stable energy bills.
Local clean energy systems like solar and geothermal are now cheaper than dangerous and polluting gas. Combined with energy efficiency and weatherization, Nevada utilities can permanently lower our energy bills.
The federal government has made the largest investment in clean energy and pollution reduction in American history, speeding up clean energy upgrades across the state. Nevadans can save money on solar panels, super-efficient heating and cooling, better insulation, and weatherization that lowers our bills and improves our health and comfort.
Local clean energy is better for our wallets and air quality
DEMAND AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE, AND CLEAN ENERGY
NV Energy and Southwest Gas care more about their profits than our needs, leading to constant rate hikes and higher bills. But we’re not staying silent. Nevadans are speaking up and demanding accountability. We’ve seen that cleaner, cheaper energy works, and we demand that they take action to protect us.
No Higher Bills for Higher Profit – Tell Monopoly Utilities Enough is Enough!
To Nevada’s policymakers and utility regulators,
As Nevada utility customers, we demand that NV Energy and Southwest Gas focus on cost-saving clean energy solutions for our communities. The seemingly endless rate hikes and surges in the price of methane (natural) gas mean that winter heating and summer air conditioning bills are too high for people to afford. It is unfair for these monopoly companies to increase their profits and continue polluting in a way that costs us all. We are counting on our utility regulators and policy makers to put an end to this and protect struggling families and businesses.
Nevada’s dependence on out-of-state, dirty, and expensive fossil fuels puts our financial and physical health in danger. With the federal government making the largest investment into clean energy and pollution reduction in American history, our state has the opportunity to move away from the bad policies of the past, bringing lower bills and cleaner air for all Nevadans.
We urge our regulators and state legislators to hold utility companies accountable and champion real solutions to reduce our bills and invest in local, pollution-free clean energy. Nevada families, not corporations and their Wall Street shareholders, must come first.
Respectfully,
A concerned customer
